Red dresses for Christmas? Cliché but why the hell not. Its flippin’ Christmas! Red, the go~to Christmas colour… why? Was it because Mr Claus set the trend many years ago and we, like little Christmas elves have obediently followed suit. Or is there more to this colour than meets the eye.
Red in nature is that colour of danger: poisonous berries or the ominous stripes on a venomous snake thats a clear sign to back off. We have adopted it in everyday life too. Red means stop. Red signals danger. It’s the go to shade of passion and love, adopted by vixens and harlots alike with their scarlet letters. A colour that balances on a fine line between danger and pleasure. When Nancy in Oliver Twist jumps up on that pub table in her hobnail boots in her iconic red dress singing Um Pa Pa, Um Pa Pa she leads the crowd into a raucous knees up something in us realised Red is the colour of beauty and vivaciousness. Red is your leading lady colour and that’s a role we like to play, sometimes. And at Christmas it seems apt, especially in the LRD form.
Red suits every skin tone and it shows confidence and flair to those who take her on. But let us make one clear distinction: Red ain’t no Pink. Whilst red can command a room her sister Pink will raises eyebrows. Red is such a majestic colour it even commands the upmost respect of the carpet world being rolled out for the most prestigious of tootsies. With so many flattering shades of red, from the darkest wine to these zingy tomato tones we love wearing it and for the festive look have gone head to toe.
As it’s the perfect party colour we choose this floral printed mini dress with cute ruffle detailing and this little lace number with flattering A-line shape skater skirt, 2 Little Red Dresses which would easily take you through to Spring. We contemplated black ankle boots or strappy sandals to style them with but seeing as we were in the festive mood opted for matching red heels and followed our own rule of short skirt/long sleeve combo for the perfect balance and silhouette.
So just as Nancy showed us, let Red join you for your festive ‘knees up’ this Christmas!
HO HO HO!
