6 Things We Learnt Denim Shopping

As everyday items that are worn over & over & over, jeans are a great place to put your money. Last week we went down to Harvey Nichols in Knightsbridge and checked out their denim collections on offer and here are 5 things we learnt. Let us be your jean genies….

We appreciate that jeans probably rank as no.1 in the trickiest items to buy. Everyone has a style that they love and suits them but sometimes actually finding that perfect fit can be a right ol’ polava. That’s were we’d recommend visiting somewhere that has a great array of different brands and cuts so you can take your time {seriously, block out some time as you can’t be in a rush} and find the perfect pair. After we had a mammoth trying on sesh we chatted about  the things we learnt when denim shopping. Here goes…

  1. It’s worth investing. If you work out the cost per wear a slightly more expensive pair actually makes them practically the same daily spend as a coffee and you just can’t beat the quality. There really is a noticeable difference. If you want your jeans to hold their style, not bag at the behind {we’ve all been there} and last the test of time we’d recommend investing. A really good denim will hug you in all the right places and be the perfect weight of fabric too.

2. Don’t stick to one size. Across the board and across brands they differ so much that we would say to throw out the sizing rule book when it comes to buying denim and start afresh. Whether ordering online or instore try a few different sizes as the materials & shapes may vary and alter what size you wear so be open minded. Your credit card will take a bashing if you are ordering online & select a few sizes but it’s worth it to truly gage which is the best size and get a perfect fit. We’ve started ordering 2/3 sizes online now if you don’t know the brand particularly well as although the amount you pay out initially makes you wince, once you have a couple of sizes to determine between in the comfort of your own home you’ll thank us! Plus free returns = win.

3. Start off tight…. as they will give and grow. Even the best pair of jeans will do this to a certain extent as they shape and mould to your body, it’s the nature of the fabric. Go tighter initially and trust us they will give, even if you are going for a boyfriend fit opt slightly tighter as you don’t want them around you knees in a few wears time.

4. Although it’s nice to play it safe, jeans are the easiest way to experiment with new trends without feeling like you are way out of your comfort zone. For us right now we are only wearing straight legs. Skinny jeans have had their day somewhat and it’s all about a straighter leg and higher waist. We think it’s a gazillion times more flattering than a skinny which now looks a bit dated IOHO. Aswell as a straight leg we are into a wide leg crop, shorter kick flares and cut about styles like these we are wearing in this shoot {seriously, love them and they don’t have the ridonculous Vetements price tag}

5. Find your shape. A shape that works for your bezzie mate isn’t necessarily going to look good on you if you are slightly different shapes. Once you have a basic idea then look for various points in a new pair such as a mid or high rise waistline and then play around with the leg shape. Or if you are all about the mom jean then opt for different washes, colours and denims to find your variety of pairs.

6 Length is key. Recently we’ve only been wearing an ankle skimming cropped length in our jeans just like the ones we are wearing here. Even though we are both tall we opt for a slightly shorter jean length to bare just the right amount of ankle when paired with a summer sandal, flat shoe or ankle boot. We think it’s a super flattering length and looks particularly good for the A/W season with a statement boot and great knit.

So that’s us spilling the beans on how to shop for jeans…. Until next time
