With the 70’s trend in big resurgence again this year you’d have to be living under a stack of Vogues not to have at least considered purchasing a hippy, swishy, seventies frock.
Don’t get us wrong, we are all about this era and have been long time finger shufflers through rails and rails of 70s dresses at the best vintage establishments in town. The dilemma is always the balance: Retro/Modern. It’s a fine line. You wanna buy into the trend and get the 70s look down, but without looking like a throwback on the way to a fancy dress party.
You hear us, right? Right.
Vintage dresses although unique and when you find a gem that fits perfectly it’s like winning the lottery, it’s almost like finding a needle in a haystack, so low are the chances. Great shape, wrong colour. Perfect print, way too tiny. And don’t get us started on the polyester.
Cue these dresses by Free People. You may recognise the name, it maybe there in your fashion periphery but get it on your radar pronto. We’ve been fans for a while but it wasn’t until we visited their first London pop up shop that it’s now pretty much at the top of our Summer Dress go to list.
One part hippy, one part sexy, one part elegant, these dresses have all the boxes ticked. As dress designers we like to think we know a bit about them, are qualified to comment if you like, and our comment is this: Go, shop. You won’t regret it. Team with blocky suede sandals and a cute pouchy bag for a day/evening look, wear now layered with a polo neck and ankle boots, or go the full hog come Summer and team with lace-up leather flats & a straw fedora. We will.
From now on if you can’t find us, we’ll be sashaying swishing down the Kings Road, coloured house and magnolia spotting from here on in.
Free spirited, free people.
