Seeing as we couldn’t get you all an actual Christmas pressie this year, we thought we’d share the next best thing virtually. Well, it is if you are as Instagram obsessed as we are… Our tips on how to {try and} beat the Instagram Algorithm. Dun dun dun… there’s THAT dreaded word. We are pretty sure that, like us, it may have plagued your life this year, it has ours, so like dogs with bones we haven’t been able to let go. When Insta has got us down we’ve researched and tested out a few things to come up with tips that work for us, to try and beat the slippery little sucker.
Here goes…

For us over the past year we’ve had this weird thing where some images have just bombed getting half the usual engagement we would normally get. If you follow us on @belleandbunty it’ll {hopefully!} be obvious that we put ALOT of time and effort into our images. Like a ridiculous amount. Because we love creating content and love sharing it with our followers… SO to post an image that is obviously not being shown to a lot of accounts who follow is extremely annoying and disappointing.

After this happened to us a few times and seeing other accounts {from those in their ten thousands to those with hundreds of thousands of followers} talking about how the algorithm was effecting their engagement
we knew it wasn’t just us posting crappy pics. Granted some images are just better than others so are naturally going to get more likes and/or comments but on a whole we couldn’t work out any rhyme or reason to it.

BUT what we had noticed was that we had been using the app a little less than normal. When life is busy and the algorithm gets you down we had started to log in less, ‘like’ less and generally take less time on the app just logging in to post an image then onto the next thing on our to-do list. Big mistake.

What we realised was the more you use Instagram the more it likes you. It’s like a puppy, stroke it’s tummy {ie. take the time to like and comment} and it will love you back.

Timing is key.

We first heard of this when blogging babe Lorna Luxe wrote about it here and it got us thinking. Posting when engagement is highest {learnt from your stats if you have a business account but also common sense: first thing in the morning, lunchtime & evenings} There is no point going to all the effort of creating a beautiful picture to post when your followers are at work or asleep!

Also it makes total sense that if you can’t be on your phone repeatedly throughout the whole day then the time that you spend on the app should coincide with when you want to post an image yourself. We’ve been spending time on Instagram before and after posting an image to show it that we are interested in our community and are spreading the love! Try spending 15 minutes engaging before you post an image & 15 minuted after, this somehow tricks the algorithm {if that’s even possible} and ta~da, no more hidden posts! We’ve been consciously doing this for the past couple of weeks and for us its works!

We have also been using Instagram Stories a lot more recently {yet to tackle LIVE!} and have been enjoying creating festive themed content so our love affair with Instagram is fully reignited and we feel that with a bit of effort again it might just love us back.
