If you are reading this then chances are that you follow us over on Instagram. That lovely little photo app that stole our hearts {and the chances of ever drinking a hot cappuccino again} and for us has been a game changer. What started as a fun way to document a little more about us as designers has turned into a business in its own right and stemmed into this here blog. It has brought us things we never dreamed it would {hello, holidays abroad} created new friendships and allowed us to work with some super lovely people & brands. And the excuse to shop, but let’s not get started on that shall we for the fear of our Husbands or Bank Manager reading this.

Some might call it a labour of love but we really do love it. Sad but true, the joy of posting a pic you think is effin amazing pretty damn good and hearing positive feedback is a virtual pat on the back and a high five from your cyber buddies. And as much as we love Instagram it seems there are a few of you out there who also love it too. Daily we get direct messages asking us how we edit of photos or for our hints & tips which got us thinking: what are our Instagram rules we live by?

Your ‘Thing’

We have a very distinct Instagram ‘look’ and this really comes from our personal styles and loves. What started as a way of showcasing our brand evolved into a way of showing our customers, and then followers, who we are and what we love. This comes down to the places we visit, cocktails we drink, clothes we wear and other brands we love to showcase. All wrapped up in our bright, colourful world!

Editing

We believe a distinct colour palette really helps if you are trying to gain followers. Have a feed as a whole that sits well together, is visually pleasing on the eye and makes it easier for people to really ‘get’ what you are about. Be it monochrome, muted pastels or bright brights, stick to a specific ‘theme’. If you like blue and denims then make sure everyone few photos has a touch of that colour in the image to tie your feed together.

To help make sure you have colour consistency use editing apps, or if you have time and ability Photoshop. There’s nothing wrong with tweaking light, shade or colours if you have the time and inclination to take it that far. Afterlight or our new favourite ColorStory are ones we use.

Also a big trick is to Screenshot! Want consistently in your feed? Then a few screenshots of what you are about to post which can then be compared to {more screenshots} of previously posted images works a treat. Does that sit well next to that image? Is it too light/too dark? Do the whites match in tone or are they too blue/yellow? Alternatively invest in an app that allows you to curate you feed and place photos next to each other before you post such as Planoly.

Quality

Both in terms of your photos {see editing above} but also quality over quantity. Never post a blurry image or anything too grainy. Don’t just bang out a load of photos, be selective as no one wants to see the same type of image over and over. If you have series of great photos then by all means share a few but make sure each one is showing the viewer something new: a full length ootd shot then a cropped in shoe shot for example. A little spot of repetition is good but you don’t want to bore your followers into unfollowing!

Consistency

Once you get into your groove make sure you are posting regularly. Followers want to hear from you, that’s why they are following! So make sure you post everyday or at least try to! Disappear for 4 weeks and your followers might disappear too. Yes, everyone needs a break now and again but why not collect & save up a few photos to post when you are wanting some downtime or are feeling uninspired?! Not very Instant but Instagrammable all the same.

We try to use a cycle of edited and curated snapshots of our lives plus photo shoot images that have been pre-shot. Of course we are not dressed up & matching everyday {bubble blown!? Soz!} but we try to be consistant with a variety of images and then repeat: coffee/cake, flatlays, ootd’s, London hotspots, shoes {shoes and more shoes} beauty buys, photoshoot images. All of which when added together give you a consistent insight into the Belle & Bunty World.
