Like a Little Britain character hypnotising us *look into my eyes, not around the eyes* it’s easier to get confused and brainwashed come August with what brands are telling you you should be buying vs. what the weather is dictating what you can actually wear. While we can’t wait to get stuck into said Autumn Winter pieces, we also don’t want to be making purchases right now that we won’t be able to use ’til a few months down the line.

So here’s our checklist we go through when purchasing wardrobe additions in August:

  1. Dresses specifically, go for a style with sleeves. While you can wear now with trainers or sandals, no need for a jacket, you can layer up come cooler weather with polo necks underneath and said knee high boots. if you are thinking of layering then you could always go a size up too.
  2. Pick prints and colours that will work with a more Autumnal colour palette. A mustard spot like this dress or a floral with some sort of dark aspect, be it a burgundy ground or bright with black print will be easier to transition through seasons as you can style with darker knitwear, boots {and possibly black tights} and muted outerwear. Leopard print is an obvious one that easily works now and will in Winter too.
  3. Think about fabrics. This cream satin style looks cute dressed down for late Summer days but also could be dressed up for Winter evenings too, plus we love the textural contrast of something slinky against a big fluffy chunky knit, or cord blazer. Unless you travel a lot it warmer climates, you are probably not going to get your wear out of white linen for the rest of the year. A slinky midi skirt looks great now with a logo tee and also works with knitwear and boots when the temperatures drop.
  4. Accessorize. Start thinking of footwear that will transition through to the new season like these cute simple pumps or snakeskin midi boots that can be worn with your fave Summer outfits but also in an August rain shower too. With the unpredictability of British weather the purchase of a boot or trainer is never going to be a bad one! A great handbag is also where we invest our money all year round, specifically in neutral colours that will always work with any look, any season.
  5. Think basics. A classic blazer will be a great buy at this time of the year as we love a longer length suit jacket slung over a midi dress with ankle boots swell as styled with cord kick flares or your basic well worn year. We just ordered this one. A cashmere sweater or chunky knit will come in handy as the weather works to make its mind up and can be layered too.
